Special Places Worth Visiting from Comandău
The town is known for its dozens of carbonated mineral springs. In the town center, you'll find the Devil's Lake (Balta Dracului), a spectacular mud volcano unique in Europe. The mofettas, mineral springs, and spa treatments are renowned for their beneficial effects on the circulatory system. Kőrösi Csoma Sándor, known as an Asian explorer and author of the world’s first Tibetan-English dictionary, was born here. The memorial house built on his birthplace offers a detailed insight into his life and work. The statue, the Reformed Church, and the peaceful rural atmosphere complete the visit beautifully.
In the birthplace of the peasant revolt leader, you will find a statue, a commemorative monument, and a wrought-iron memorial enclosure. Inside the church, a historical inscription written in the Szekler runic script can be seen.
Therapeutic waters, mofettas, and volcanic phenomena. The Sulfurous Cave (Grota Sulfuroasă) is one of the largest natural mofettas in Europe. Saint Anna Lake is Romania’s only volcanic crater lake, and nearby you’ll find Tinovul Mohoș, a protected peat bog area with a thematic trail offering unique flora and fauna – an unforgettable experience for nature lovers.
Also called the "Thermopylae of the Szeklerss," this location was the site of one of the most heroic battles of the 1848–49 Revolution. An obelisk and a collection of Szekler funerary poles (kopjafák) honor the memory of the fallen heroes.
The Haszmann Pál Museum offers an open-air collection of Szekler houses, stoves, tools, and agricultural machinery. The classicist-style church and the open-air museum are ideal attractions for the whole family.
At the Mikes–Szentkereszty Manor in Zagon, memorial rooms present the lives of Mikes Kelemen, an 18th-century Transylvanian writer famous for his Letters from Turkey, and Kiss Manyi, a highly regarded 20th-century theater and film actress. The Zăbala Castle Park, beautifully restored, offers romantic alleys, a boating lake, and a wild, natural setting that make it a truly special place.
